Watch The Signs
Mark 8: 11-13
¯When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had arrived, they came to argue with Him.
Testing Him to see if He was from God, they demanded,
¯Give us a miraculous sign from heaven to prove yourself.¯
When He heard this, He sighed deeply and said, ¯Why do you people keep demanding a miraculous sign? I assure you, I will not give this generation any such sign.¯
So He got back into the boat and left them, and He crossed to the other side of the lake.¯
Matthew 16: 1-4
¯One day the Pharisees and Sadducees came to test Jesus' claims by asking him to show them a miraculous sign from heaven. Jesus replied, "You know the saying, 'Red sky at night means fair weather tomorrow, red sky in the morning means foul weather all day.' You are good at reading the weather signs in the sky, but you can't read the obvious signs of the times! Only an evil, faithless generation would ask for a miraculous sign, but the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonah." Then Jesus left them and went away.¯
Matthew 12: 38-41
¯One day some teachers of religious law and Pharisees came to Jesus and said,
¯Teacher, we want you to show us a miraculous sign to prove that you are from God.¯
But Jesus replied, "Only an evil, faithless generation would ask for a miraculous sign; but the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was in the belly of the great fish for three days and three nights, so I, the Son of Man, will be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights. The people of Nineveh will rise up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah.
And now someone greater than Jonah is here¯and you refuse to repent.¯
The phrase ¯signs of the times¯ actually was coined by Jesus.
One day, the Pharisees and Sadducees approached Jesus together, which was quite remarkable, because these two groups didn¯t get along. They didn¯t mix. They didn¯t hang out together.
They were polar opposites on the theological spectrum.
But the one thing they had in common was their hatred for Jesus.
So they came to Him to test Him and demand a miracle.
Now they had already seen a boatload of miracles.
They had seen Jesus cast out demons, calm storms, heal the sick, feed thousands of people, and even raise the dead. Yet they had the audacity to demand another sign.
Interestingly, Mark¯s Gospel, commenting on this same event, tells us that after they said this to Jesus, He sighed deeply (see the verse above in Mark 8:12).
After all Jesus had done, after all of the miracles He performed, they were coming to Him and demanding another sign. I can see Jesus sighing with disappointment, can¯t you?
Jesus told them,
"You know the saying, 'Red sky at night means fair weather tomorrow, red sky in the morning means foul weather all day.' You are good at reading the weather signs in the sky, but you can't read the obvious signs of the times! Only an evil, faithless generation would ask for a miraculous sign, but the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonah." (Matthew 16:2¯4)
In other words, ¯You can read the weather signs. Why can¯t you read the signs of the times?¯
How often do people worry about whether it will rain, yet they don¯t give a single serious thought about where they will spend eternity?
We need to pay attention to the signs of the times around us so that we will be fully ready for Christ¯s return.
The signs of the times are all around us pointing to the end times.
Some are more interested in reading weather signs than reading the signs of the times?
How about you?
