Cleanse The Temple
Hebrews 12:14 “…. without Holiness no man can see God”
After Jesus performed His first miracle at the wedding in Cana, He went to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. (John 2:13-16) He found that the temple had become corrupt they were selling sheep and doves; and the money changers were doing business there. This was happening at the holiest site in Israel and at the most solemn time of the year.
With righteous anger, Jesus turned over their tables, made a whip, and drove them all out of the temple. He said to those who sold doves— “take these things away! Do not make my Father’s house a house of merchandise!” This event strengthens the disciples’ conviction that He truly was the Messiah.
1 Corinthians 3:16 “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?”
We are the dwelling place for the Holy Spirit it is so important that we do not allow ourselves to be overtaken by the things of this world. The temple of Jesus’ day was filled with worldly pursuits, and “religious” activity, it had absolutely nothing to do with the purpose God had created it for. What is going on in your temple, are you going through the motions just doing your religious duties. Have you exchanged your godly purpose for the things of man?
Jesus is coming soon, He is going to come to our temples and look inside, He will see what is there and judge it. Will He find your temple in order? Will He see the word? Will He find any fruit of the Spirit? I’m betting there will be many things in there that He will have to drive out, many tables that He will have to overturn, and many activities that He will do away with.
There was a second cleansing of the temple. The first cleansing was at the beginning of His public ministry. The second cleansing is in Matthew 21:12, here He is about to be crucified, He is cleansing the temple one more time, preparing it for what is to come.
Matthew 21:13 “And said unto them, it is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.”
After this cleansing it says in verse 14, then the blind, and the lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed them. After He cleaned out the religious activity, after He drove out the worldly pursuits and financial gain there was freedom. The Spirit of healing was released into the temple, the clutter of life and religion and been removed, and now true ministry could freely flow in the house of God. Prayer, healing, hope and restoration can only come from a deep-down cleansing of the church leadership, pastors, and people.
Have you ever wondered why we don’t see the signs and wonders—the greater works that Jesus said we would do? Maybe it is because our temple is cluttered with the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches. Our focus is on what God can do for us, rather than what can God do with us. If we allow Him to put an axe to the root of the thorns and thistles that are trying to choke out the word, and let Him clean us, prune us and turn us around we will see our gifts increase, and our fruit develop and feed and minister to a hurt and dying world.
It is time for us to allow the Lord to cleanse us with a deep cleansing and purification truly sanctifying our heart and soul. If we want to be part of the Kingdom we have to come boldly and seek this deep cleaning allow the Lord to cleans us with hyssop—an herb that is associated with cleansing and purification—a deep heart and soul cleansing. Without a change in our heart attitude, and the deep inner spirit, if there is no true repentance, no change, the same old religious practices that have made the church powerless in this day and age will continue.
But I sense there is a new wave of the Holy Spirit about to be released in the earth. Yes, there will be trials and tribulations, but Jesus said to be of good cheer for He has overcome them. Let us ride this wave with joy, with hope, and with clean hands and a pure heart.
Jesus is coming soon prepare our hearts, clean out the old to make room for the new.
