PRAISE AND POWER                            OUR PAST IS FORGIVEN                           July 24, 2019

Hebrews 10:12,14 says, “But this man [Jesus Christ], after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; … For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.” Jesus Christ sacrificed his life to redeem us and give us forgiveness of sins. Isaiah 40:1 and 2: "Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. Speak ye comfortably [tenderly to the heart of] to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the LORD’S hand double for all her sins."

First it says that Jerusalem’s iniquities are pardoned, and then it says she received double for all her sins. This sounds like a contradiction, doesn’t it? That is because we read it in the light of the English language. We think that when we get double for something, we get twice as much. Getting double for our wages means we get twice as much. "Double trouble" means twice as much trouble. Surely we must be aware that something doesn’t fit here. We know that God does not pardon and punish with the same stroke of His hand. When God pardons our sins, He forgets them.

Micah 7:19 says, “He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea." They are more irretrievable that the "Titanic." Psalm 103:12 says, "As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us." How far east do you have to go to find the direction of west? You could travel forever! God’s forgiveness and forgetfulness are so far gone that even He cannot remember them.

Hebrews 8:12: "For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and iniquities will I remember no more." In Bible times the elders of the gate considered disputes brought to them by the people of the city. They were responsible for making decisions concerning the punishment or settlement of the dispute. The city gate was a sort of “bulletin board” where all of these records were posted. If a certain person was so far in debt that there was no way he could pay that debt, his record would be posted for the public to see that he was a bad credit risk. His record would remain in public view until his creditors would be paid off.

A beneficiary, probably a relative, might come to his rescue and pay off all the debts for him. When that was completed to the satisfaction of the creditors, the elders of the gate would take down the sheet of paper recording all of his debts. They would double up the paper so that only the name of the former debtor would be revealed. All that the public could now see would be his name and a clean white sheet below it. No one would be able to find anything against him. The past was wiped clean, blotted out. It was as though the past never existed.

Jesus Christ paid the price for our sin and iniquity. When we are filled with God’s spirit, our sins are gone. There is nothing on record that shows any past failures or shortcomings. It is as though they never existed. Colossians 2:14: "Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;…" Once God has forgiven us, no one has the right to hold our past against us. We have no right to condemn ourselves for our past. Every time we bring up the past, we are unfolding that paper for all to see again. God has blotted out, obliterated it forever, in His mind. Let’s walk out today in the confidence that our past is forgiven and that God cannot remember it because Jesus Christ paid the price for it and does not exist any longer!!! God has blessed us.

We are equally blessed by God’s forgiveness. As we also share in His love and our prayers for each other, may we enjoy together God’s goodness, blessings and abundance week by week and year by year.
