PRAISE AND POWER                   HOW TO LEARN FROM GOD’S WORD                August 17, 2019

“Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy [the prophecy of the Scripture] came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost [God].” (II Peter 1:20, 21) God’s Word did not come by the will of man. God told holy men what to say and what to write. For that reason these things in God’s Word, though written by men, are not the words of men. God told the various writers of the Bible what to write and they wrote what God told them to. So in learning God’s Word, we must recognize that we are not to privately interpret what It says. God’s Word either interprets Itself or there is no interpretation. It interprets Itself. Holy men wrote the Scriptures so our focus needs to be on the Scriptures.

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine [how to believe rightly], for reproof [pointing out places where a person is not believing rightly], for correction [telling a person how to get back to right believing], for instruction in righteousness [right or correct living]: That the man of God [the one who speaks for God] may be perfect, throughly [not thoroughly] furnished [perfected] unto all good works.” (2 Timothy 3:16, 17) In learning God’s Word we need to know that It is profitable for how to believe correctly; for pointing out places where a person is not believing as he or she should; for informing a person on how to get back to right believing; all of which is instruction in right living, how to live correctly. So a person should go to God’s Word expecting to have instruction on how to live correctly. The purpose of God’s Word is that whoever speaks for God or represents God will be throughly [not thoroughly] perfected by this instruction and thus accomplish every good work. The profitable things for God’s representative are found in the Scriptures, God’s Word.

A person may ask how this learning from God’s Word takes place? II Timothy 2:15 tells us: “Study [put forth a diligent effort] to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” The word of truth is God’s Word. By diligent effort, a person can learn from God’s Word in such a way as to not privately interpret It. As a workman of God’s Word a person should strive to keep verses or topics in context; recognize and properly apply the various figures of speech in the Bible; allow the Word of God to define and interpret Itself; etc. (Email for a more complete list of study methods.)

Proverbs 2:1 - 9 sets forth a standard for learning in which God declares: “My son [“son” can also be used in the Bible of a student, my student], if thou wilt receive my words [God’s Word], and hide my [God’s] commandments with thee; 2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; 3 Yea, if thou criest after knowledge [the knowledge God’s Word declares], and liftest up thy voice for understanding; 4 If thou seekest her [understanding] as silver, and searchest for her [understanding] as for hid treasures; 5 Then shalt thou understand the fear [reverence] of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. 6 For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. 7 He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he [God] is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. 8 He [God] keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints. 9 Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.” (Proverbs 2:1 - 9) The result of this type of diligent study by a student of God’s Word gets the type of results that are declared in II Timothy 3:16, 17.

This shows a person how to study and learn from the Scriptures, God’s Word.
