PRAISE AND POWER                               GREATER LOVE                        September 28, 2019

A lawyer once tempted Jesus Christ by asking “which is the great commandment in the law?” Matthew 22 gives his answer: “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” (Matthew 22:37 - 40) Later in the Gospel of John, Jesus Christ speaks of a new commandment: “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” (John 13:34) This new commandment is a higher standard than loving your neighbor as yourself. It is to love one another as Jesus Christ loved. Let’s look at John 15:13: “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.

What has been called the badge of Christianity is the love that Christians share with each other. “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” (John 13:35) Disciples are disciplined ones. The disciplined followers of Jesus Christ practice love for each other. In John 14:21 Jesus said: “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.” Love is very significant. God’s people have been instructed to love God, Jesus Christ and one another. During the time of his life and ministry on earth, Jesus Christ said that a person who had his commandments and keeps them; is loved by both him and God.

Look at John 14:23: “Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.” A person who loved Jesus Christ kept his words. Part of the keeping of the words of Jesus Christ today includes getting born again. When a person confesses Jesus as lord and believes God raised him from the dead, according to Romans 10:9, receives the gift of holy spirit. Jesus Christ demonstrated his love for God according to John 14:31a: “But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do.” Keeping God’s Word also proves our love for God.

Jesus Christ did what God commanded him to do. There is a way for God’s people to abide in love as John 15:10 states: “If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.” One of the commandments that Jesus Christ gave his disciples, we looked at earlier. Here it is again: “This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.” (John 15:12) If that is not clear enough, it is repeated in John 15:17: “These things I command you, that ye love one another.”

When we bring to mind what I John 4:7 and 8 say, we have even more insight about God and love: “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” Love is of God and God is love. Everyone who loves with the love of God, is born of God and knows God. A person who does not love, does not know God because God is love. Jesus Christ lived love all the way to the laying down of his life. “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13) “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” (John 13:34)
