PRAISE AND POWER                             EDIFY ONE ANOTHER                           November 7, 2019

We have all been in situations when someone has been critical of us, or disappointed us, or things have not gone our way. Our response might be to turn on that person and say something hurtful, or we might forget to go to God in prayer to help us with the situation. God is so kind and loving. He gave us very clear instructions in His Word for what to do in such circumstances and very wonderful promises to put on in our minds and believe. Let’s look at some of them.

“Let us therefore follow after [pursue] the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify [build up] another.” (Romans 14:19) “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” (Romans 8:6) “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.” (Colossians 3:15) These verses of Scripture show us that the believers should follow after or pursue things that would result in peace and that would edify or build up one another. We are not instructed to tear down each other or make each other feel bad. We are also told in Romans not to think thoughts contrary to God’s Word [to be carnally minded],  but to think according to what God’s Word says [to be spiritually minded] which is life and peace. We also are to let that peace of God rule in our hearts and be thankful. That is something to think about. How thankful are we? Just think about how many things we have to be thankful for! Have you ever tried making a thankful list daily for a month? It might surprise you, especially when you talk to God about it and give Him the thanks.

“I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation [calling] wherewith ye are called, With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing [upholding] one another in love; Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”

(Ephesians 4:1 - 3) God wants us to walk worthy of the calling to which we have been called. We have been called sons of God! God asks us, as His sons, to uphold one another in love, with lowliness, meekness and longsuffering. We are not asked to just “put up with” each other. We are asked to “uphold one another in love.” God would not ask us to do this if we could not. We are called into one Body and as we love one another, we are living to guard the unity that is from the spirit in the uniting bond of peace.

“If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.  Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:…” (Philippians 2:1 - 5)

Can we do this? Yes, we can as we put God’s Word in our minds. We can see Christ in our brothers and sisters. We can esteem others better than ourselves. We can uphold one another in love.
