Whooo, this is a biggy, lots of messages preached on this verse.

We are not talking about works of the law here.
(Gal 3:1-2)  O foolish Galatians, who bewitched you not to obey the truth, to whom before your eyes Jesus Christ was written among you crucified?  This only I would learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law, or by hearing of faith?

 Merva's VersADay
(One scripture a day keeps the devil away)
~~~~~~
James 2:17  King James Version (KJV)
17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
**********
James 2:17  New Life Version (NLV)
17 A faith that does not do things is a dead faith.
**********
James 2:17  English Standard Version (ESV)
17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
**********
James 2:17  The Message
17 Isn't it obvious that God-talk without God-acts is outrageous nonsense?
What this verse means to me...
    We as Christians have "faith".  Faith (or belief) in God...asking Him to be our Savior!  BUT, we HAVE to have works too.  We have to do labor; anything accomplished by toil, or exertion, along with our Faith in GOD.
    Here are a couple verses, too, that have the same meaning...
    James 2:14  -  What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but does not have works?  Can this kind of faith save him?
    James 2:19-20  -  You believe that God is one; well and good.  Even the demons believe that - and tremble with fear.  But would you like evidence, you empty fellow, that faith without works is useless?
    James 2:26  For just as one body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.
    It's neat how the Bible HAS different verses that say the same thing...that mean the same thing.  It proves something that things are true.  What I mean by that, is that hearing/reading something more than one time makes it clearer, doesn't it!!
    I like how "The Message" explained the verse...
James 2:17  The Message
17 Isn't it obvious that God-talk without God-acts is outrageous nonsense?
What do YOU think???
