PRAISE AND POWER                           GO YE AND PREACH                                     June 2, 2021

“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost [holy spirit]: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” (Matthew 28:18 - 20) [The words: “baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost” were added to the Greek text sometime around 325 AD. Eucebius, who is one of the early Christian writers, quoted Matthew 28:19, eighteen times before 325 AD as “baptizing them in my name.” After that date he quoted it three times as it appears in the King James Version. Why the change? At a Church Council in 325 AD it was determined those words should be added. There is no record of the disciples ever doing what the changed text declared. They did go everywhere preaching and teaching. But the baptizing was with the gift of holy spirit, in the name of Jesus Christ.] Truly Jesus Christ sent them forth to preach and teach.

Mark 16:15 – 18 also proclaims this truth: “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel [good news regarding Jesus Christ] to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned [judged].  And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; [if] They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. (Mark 16:15 - 18) There is no record in the Book of Acts or in the Church Epistles of anyone handling snakes. The addition of “if” clarifies and adheres to the context also relating to poison. Let’s not get side tracked by this omission. The disciples were instructed to go everywhere and preach the gospel to everyone.

Let’s consider the similar occurrence in Luke: “And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things. And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.” (Luke 24:36 - 49) The disciples were instructed to preach repentance and remission of sins in his name, the name of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ prepared them before his crucifixion and opened their understanding of the Scriptures in his resurrected body before the ascension. Then he declared that the promise of the Father would be coming soon.

They remained in Jerusalem as instructed and on the day of Pentecost they received the gift of holy spirit. They were endued with power from on high. They spoke in tongues, which proved that they had the promised seed, holy spirit on the inside. Then from there they fanned out to Samaria, Damascus, Joppa, Cesarea, Antioch, and beyond to Cyprus, Macedonia, Athens, Rome … They went everywhere preaching and teaching in the name of Jesus Christ. People were healed, saved, devils cast out, etc. But what about today? It is the same God. The same Jesus Christ and the same gift of holy spirit.; the same gospel. Since they did it; so do we. Go ye and preach.
